Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Did you know that one of the major contributors to heart disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s is chronic inflammation? Inflammation is our bodies response to harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, or pathogens. Inflammation traditionally has been associated with pain, heat, redness, swelling, and loss of function; however, what you may not know is that you may be highly inflamed without any of these signs or symptoms. Stress, lack of exercise, genetic predisposition, and exposure to toxins (like secondhand tobacco smoke) can all contribute to such chronic inflammation, but dietary choices play a big role as well.

So it only makes sense to increase exercise, remove toxins from our home and avoid foods that cause high levels of inflammation. Research also suggests that consuming foods that decrease inflammation can prevent disease and lead to long term health and wellness. Foods to avoid are foods high in trans fats, omega-6 oils, refined sugars and flours. Overeating and fast food have also been found to increase systemic inflammation. The majority of people that live an anti-inflammatory lifestyle notice the following:

  • More energy
  • Weight loss
  • Healthy skin
  • Decrease in muscle aches and pains
  • Diabetic control and resolution
  • Decrease symptoms: acne, headaches, fibromyalgia, arthritis, allergies, hypertension and psoriasis
